Review--Undead to the World by D.D. Barant

Vampires, werewolves, shapeshifters, ghosts--profiler Jace Valchek thought she had seen it all. Until now...

Even the town’s only Goth is still wearing eyeliner. But just as Jace is about to click her heels and hightail out of there, she’s roped into a brand-new case. Somebody is possessed. And the bodies are piling up…

They call him the Gallowsman. According to legend, he was sentenced to hang—though his crimes still have not been specified. When he was strung up to die, his spirit stuck around waiting for people to hang themselves…so he could steal their bodies. Now, with the undead rising up and going on a rampage, Jace must put her own neck on the line. Can she get the Gallowsman to give up the ghost?

To sum up D.D. Barant's Undead to the World, I'd have to say it was pretty epic, if a mite confusing. Jace is still our heroine, but she's not quite the same. The cover description kind of gives you that heads up but I still wasn't prepared for a Jace living in Thropirelem, Kansas who worked as a waitress part-time and worked in a hardware store the other part of the time. Yeah, confused is a nice way of putting things.

But I always find it best to just roll with it and see where things go, which tends to be the best thing to do. Jace was once in a mental institution but was released on the condition that she never watched the show she was obsessed with and caused her breakdown. That show is called The Bloodhound Files--sound familiar?! Ironically, that heroine is named Jace too and she lives in a world populated by vampires, werewolves and golems; she chases down the bad guys and basically fights crime.

Then one night when she was watching the show, for she never truly gave it up, she's shocked when one of the characters talks to her. Literally, she turns and strikes up a conversation with Jace. Obviously Jace begins to re-question her sanity.

She begins to encounter some situations with some of her "neighbors" who start to go a little batty (or hairy) and attack her, yet she's able to defend herself. Soon her memory returns and she's determined to get back home but she's going to need help. Although it will be very hard for her to figure out who she can trust because not everyone is who they appear to be. With the use of some magic, she's able to communicate with her friends back in her real Thropirelem and they somehow cross over into her demented world spiritually and possess their counterpart.

Of course there's still the very real and ghostly threat of the Gallowsman who's haunting her town and killing people. He's pretty much on his own killing spree and he has no intentions of letting Jace and her friends leave.

This was quite the exciting read! You never knew who was who or who you could trust. I couldn't always recall certain characters or names when they popped up, like names from previous books other than the last one I read this week. Which was both good and bad I suppose, because then when one of the townspeople is revealed to be so-and-so it was shocking! Although, there were times that I still didn't realize who they were due to memory lapses and all. But at other times there were hints or you could just recognize the name.

The mystery to this one was good, if a little chaotic! Since from the beginning we have no idea what's going on, you pretty much focus on the Gallowsman part of the story, but then weird things start happening with some of the townspeople, such as they begin to remember who they are--such as a oire or throp--and that they don't like Jace for some reason.

There was a good dose of action as well! It starts out a little slow since the reader has that discombobulated feeling, but once the story gets rolling, things getting exciting because we want Jace to get back home. As for romance in this one, there was pretty much none. But the story was still good, especially considering this is the series finale.

Although, I have to say D.D. left me shouting a bit at the end, because well, it was warranted! It's the cliffhanger of all cliffhangers and what's worse is that it's the last book. There are no further answers. I guess it's one of those types of endings that the reader can create for their self, but still. It was a tad frustrating to not know the final ending in its entirety. Much like the series finale to Angel--which still blows my mind from having just watched the series last year!

But overall this was a pretty enjoyable read! The series has been quite a ride--I do at least remember enjoying the previous books, otherwise I wouldn't have finished the series! It's definitely an entertaining one at that as well. Good storylines, mystery, a bit of romance mixed in, some action and humor to balance it all up! A perfect read! Or yes, a GREAT read!


Overall Rating 4.95/5 stars--yeah, a weird rating but that ending really threw me! Still kind of reeling from it, but it didn't detract from the rest of the story!

WHY?!

Argh!

So I was on my computer way early this morning around 1am. Yeah, I'm weird, I wake myself up early on Fridays to read some Follow Friday posts so that way when I wake up later I don't have to go through so many before I head to work. I'm weird, but it's a system that I find works nicely.

You all know I was having internet issues earlier this week and it FINALLY came back on Tuesday afternoon. So guess what happens a mere 4 hours after I was on the internet today.

Yup, it crapped out on me! I was furious! I would've started screaming and shouting obscenities but my niece and sister were still sleeping and I did not want to wake them.

But yeah, I am still fuming a bit. Like literally fuming! I just got my internet back and it suddenly decides to STOP working?! After it was working 4 hours earlier! Seriously. It was practically 4 hours to the letter. Or you know 20 minutes before but then that means it crapped out 3 hours and 40 minutes after working!!!

Basically I just needed a place to rant out my frustration, hence my post. When I get home later this afternoon I hope it will be working. For some reason I think I might need to redo EVERYTHING again in the whole setup process, but that doesn't make sense to me at all since our router name is still showing in available networks when I try to log on.

If I hadn't said it before--and I believe I have numerous times--I hate technology!

This week's question is: Have you broken up with a series? If so which one and why?

MY ANSWER: Yes actually. I can't recall all of them, but one that comes to mind is the Abby Sinclair series by Allison Pang and the Cassie Palmer series by Karen Chance. I'm not sure how it happened exactly, but the series no longer held my interest while I was reading. For the longest time I kept reading the Cassie books even though I found myself not enjoying them as much. I finally gave up on them around the third or fourth book.

Review--Back from the Undead by D.D. Barant

Vampires, lycanthropes, golems, and other creatures who make up 99% of the population--these are the characters who fill FBI profiler Jace Valcheck's days. And just when she thinks life is starting to seem "normal," Jace finds herself in a whole new world of trouble.

Another work day, another case for the Bloodhound Files. But this time, Jace is truly stumped: How is she, a mere human, supposed to penetrate the dark heart of a child-trafficking ring of pire orphans—one that turns out to be part of a blood-farm operation, in the crime-ridden border city of Vancouver, British Columbia?

Jace is in over her head. But with the help of her former lover, Tanaka—whose family is one of the last samurai clans left in Japan—she stands a chance at seeking justice for the condemned children… Until the Yakuza tries to put an end to Jace’s investigation. Jace risks more than death—this time, it’s the fate of her very soul that’s in danger...

Continuing down the line of series I haven't read in over a year is D.D. Barant's The Bloohound Files. This is a very exciting series where the heroine is sucked into another world, much like her own except that all sorts of supernatural characters rule the day and night, and humans make up about 1% of the world population. Jace was brought over from her world to this one to track down and capture or kill a serial killer known as Aristotle Stoker. The only problem is, that the sorcerer who did the spell that brought her to this world is in cahoots with Stoker and just plain has a plan of his own. 

One thing I've noticed lately in these last 3 covers--including the next one--are the wolves that surround Jace. It's odd because there are never really moments where she's in the company of so many werewolves. Granted the covers are pretty awesome now, but don't make much sense to the story.

Anyway, the case Jace works on this time in Back from the Undead, is definitely interesting. Vampire children have gone missing, they are orphans basically, on the street, but too many are disappearing and it's been noticed. Surprisingly by Stoker, our villain. Jace is going to have to work with Stoker this time around in order to uncover all the unsavory doings of the unknown villain and get the children back to their normal life. It's pretty much a given that being homeless has got to be better than being used and tormented in some dastardly way.

Much like with my last read, I have totally forgotten nearly everything that has happened previously in this series. I recalled a little bit here and there, but it's hard to leave a series untouched for awhile and then dive back in and understand all that's going on. 

But it was nice in some ways because a lot of things can be surprising. Like I nearly forgotten that Jace and Cassius got physical last time around! There wasn't much time for romance though, as before Jace takes on this case, Cassius leaves to handle one of his own and was practically non-existent for the remainder of the novel--all 200+ pages that remained. But it wasn't dreadful. I much enjoy the action scenes than the romance ones, although those are always nice when they pop up unexpectedly!

This had a nice mystery vibe going, but I think my being gone from the series and the world for so long made it harder for me to pick up on things. There's quite a bit of mythology woven into this one and it wasn't one I was familiar with. Those little things combined made it harder for me to understand the aha! moment. But I just rolled with it really!

There was lots of action in this one, Jace seems to attract the wrong kind of attention at the worst times, but it always makes for a great adventure! Charlie, the lovable golem--never thought I would type that sentence--is positively my favorite character. Made from the remains of a T-Rex, he is one tough dude! He can kick major ass when needed and he and Jace have developed quite the friendship and it's endearing all that would do for her. He's also pretty damn funny, Jace is the sarcastic, snarky type and Charlie will just surprise you with a random quip that is just too funny! He can match Jace in her sarcasm when the moment calls for it.

Looking forward to seeing how this series ends, because after the mystery part of the story was all wrapped up, D.D. throws in a whopper of a cliffhanger! Luckily I have the final book ready to go!

Random Thursday

Do you ever wonder in cartoons, how old the actual cartoon character is? Yeah, weird question but I find myself with cartoons on more often than not while blogging or doing this or that in my room. Even have them on mute if I am reading at home.

Take for instance SpongeBob Squarepants. How old is he? He's in his boating school, has a job and a house. Yet he acts very childish. I want to say teenager like, but then what about the rest of his friends? And also, a teenager living on his own? So maybe college age?

Then that also kind of relates to the other cartoon shows where the characters never age! Like Rugrats or The Simpsons! They stay the same age for years and years, holidays continue to come and go and yet Lisa is still in the same grade! I get that cartoons have to have their characters ageless, but it makes you wonder some time. It's like they are stuck in some sort of time loop, where the days just keep going on endlessly and they never age. 

Of course I do give props to Rugrats for doing the whole All Grown Up version of Rugrats. Although I wasn't impressed with said cartoon show, because the Rugrats Gang are just babies to me. I did like the Rugrats episode special where we got to see what they would be like in ten years!

For that matter, The Simpsons have had their share of "futuristic" episodes where we got to see them age a bit. I found it funny though that in some of those, Maggie still never talked!

Review--Wrong Side of Dead by Kelly Meding

Monster hunter Evangeline Stone woke up on the wrong side of dead this morning—and now there’s hell to pay.

Barely recovered from her extended torture at the hands of mad scientist Walter Thackery, Evy can use a break. What she gets instead is a war, as the battered Triads that keep Dreg City safe find themselves under attack by half-Blood vampires who have somehow retained their reason, making them twice as lethal. Worse, the Halfies are joined by a breed of were-creature long believed extinct—back and more dangerous than ever. Meanwhile, Evy’s attempts at reconciliation with the man she loves take a hit after Wyatt is viciously assaulted—an attack traced to Thackery, who has not given up his quest to exterminate all vampires... even if he has to destroy Dreg City to do it. With Wyatt’s time running out, another threat emerges from the shadows and a staggering betrayal shatters the fragile alliance between the Triads, vampires, and shapeshifters, turning Evy’s world upside down forever.

Wow. It's been way too long since I last read the Dreg City books by Kelly Meding. My memory was a total blank in some areas. Luckily, Kelly does the important recaps in Wrong Side of Dead. It helped me somewhat, but other details were still too lost. That's the trouble with reading too many books! Sadly, this is the last book in the series as it was cancelled. There's always help for resurrection though!

This book has two stories going on, one in the past and the other the present. For the most part, we're in the present and the past is really just about a month ago, weeks even. The Triads are gone. The whole system that Evie and Wyatt were apart of has disbursed. There's a new one on the horizon though, composed of Triad members and others, such as the vampires and a few shifter types. They are called the Watch and basically do the same thing the Triads did, fighting evil in Dreg City and keeping the humans safe.

Walter Thackery is still on the loose and still scheming as always. His need to protect and preserve the human race includes killing anything non-human. His skewed personality is due to having his wife and unborn child killed by a Halfie. But he just keeps on killing other "others" and he must be stopped.

When Evie's friend and goddaughter are kidnapped by Thackery, she goes to amazing lengths to save them before he can kill or torment them like he did to her. Although, she was a special case, it's best to never put anything past the madman.

The segments of the present take place in a day. Like I said, there are brief segments--ie a few chapters--where we're in the past about a month ago and it moves forward a bit. But the current time, everything goes down in a day. Including Wyatt being attacked by a werewolf. He battles infection for quite awhile and it doesn't look good for him and it drives Evie to fight even harder. Thackery must die.

It's sad to read a book and know that it is the last in the series unwillingly. I was expecting shocking cliffhanger endings, much like I received in another series I read that was cancelled and I didn't know until later on. But knowing doesn't make it any easier. This ending though wasn't as horrid with the cliffhangers as I thought it would be. True, there's some unfinished business, but the day ends on a somewhat happy note, if not, content.

The action though was pretty awesome! Being just another day in Evie's chaotic life, there was never a dull moment. Although, I was slightly confused with the flashbacks when they started happening. I couldn't quite figure out what their purpose was, until they got moving a little more. Then it made sense and all was well.

Evy is a fun heroine. I feel she is very real and down to earth. She's not the total badass chick in leather--although those are pretty wicked--but she's still pretty kickass. She can handle herself and I feel like that is a good type of heroine. She has her struggles with some physical things since she still cannot get used to the new body she's in, but she tries.

There wasn't too much romance in this one, since in the beginning Evy and Wyatt are on a break and we find out why through some of those flashbacks. Which I keep saying flashbacks, but it's not Evy reflecting on anything, I think it's more like one of those things that benefits the reader, we get to see what she went through.

Overall it was a very good read! I wish I hadn't stayed away too long since my memory recall isn't the hottest thing around when I read so many different books. Going to have more challenges ahead of me when I move onto some other previously untouched series. But I did enjoy this! The series from the beginning has been interesting and there are still so many questions I have about Evy and her abilities that I cannot recall if they were ever answered. It's possible. One of these days I will have to re-read the series.

Love-love-love this series! Actually preordered this one just before I lost my power! Whew! Although I am not loving the cover change, I can deal. The writing's the same and that's all that matters!!

Yay! Internet's back!

I AM BACK!!!

I've been using the internet at work for the past two days. Cannot check email, but can do a bit of blogging. We had to buy a whole new DSL modem thingy and after many harrowing hours and finally getting a hold of someone at the help desk I have successfully gotten it up and running and the wireless is working smoothly as well! 

YAY!! So I will be back to commenting at my regular speed now!

Review--Trapped by Kevin Hearne

After twelve years of secret training, Atticus O’Sullivan is finally ready to bind his apprentice, Granuaile, to the earth and double the number of Druids in the world. But on the eve of the ritual, the world that thought he was dead abruptly discovers that he’s still alive, and they would much rather he return to the grave.

Having no other choice, Atticus, his trusted Irish wolfhound, Oberon, and Granuaile travel to the base of Mount Olympus, where the Roman god Bacchus is anxious to take his sworn revenge—but he’ll have to get in line behind an ancient vampire, a band of dark elves, and an old god of mischief, who all seem to have KILL THE DRUID at the top of their to-do lists.

After years of being behind in this series, I am now finally caught up! Kevin Hearne's Trapped doesn't actually pick up where we left off in Tricked. It's been twelve years, Granualie is nearly ready to become the second Druid in the world, she just has to be bound to the earth and get her tattoos. Basically an initiation of  sorts, but there's quite a few problems getting in the way and things are not in her and Atticus's favor.

Everyone thought that these two were dead, and when the word gets out that they are alive, old enemies coming gunning for them. Bacchus, the Roman god is back and clamoring for revenge. Leif is also around looking to "make amends" plus yet another old and powerful vampire, Theophilus wants Atticus for something, then there's Hel who is reigning crazy wherever she walks. Add to that Loki is on the loose and there's a large gathering of dark elves who want Atticus dead, for real this time. All in the day of a life of a Druid!

There is always an abundance of action in these books that I find most entertaining! There's never a dull moment and it seems that Atticus will not be getting a break for the foreseeable future and beyond! 

I am trying to remember what happened in the first half that I read before we got that nasty storm on Friday, add to that the hectic no-power filled weekend, and my mind is a bit scattered-brain! The second half was very exciting though! It pretty much concludes what happened in the first which involved Atticus trying to get Granualie bound to the earth to become a Druid, but people--or things--kept interrupting. And when they finally manage the task, there's still a whole lot to do and Granualie is just fresh in her Druid-ness.

Granualie though can kick some ass! For being the female role and yet not the lead, she is pretty freaking awesome! And Atticus too, he's one bad ass Druid! To complete the trio, we have Oberon, the Irish wolfhound who has truly stolen my heart! I love that dog, he's so funny and I know I say that in every review for this series, but it's the truth! Oberon truly brings the laughs into this series!

This time around, the romance, albeit not centrally focused on, heats up a little more. Granualie and Atticus take things a little further this go around since they are no longer trainer and apprentice. And from what there was to see, I enjoyed. I also like the fact that Kevin keeps the story moving along and doesn't stop every now and then to add in more romantic moments between the two. I guess it's a guy thing not to focus on the romance, but it makes for a nice change of pace!

The ending to this one was, yet again, spectacular! There's another amazing battle that you can actually see when reading. How tense and dire the situation is and then when you think there's a moment's pause to breathe, you're taken by surprise with the need to run for your life! Needless to say, this one ends with a bit more of a cliffhanger! Luckily the next novel comes out in a few weeks, but will I get to it at that point in time? Who's to say, but I will definitely be reading it somewhere down the line!

MIA, but not by choice!

OMG, it feels good to be back! You might have noticed my absence this weekend in the blogging world and let me reassure you, it was not by choice or illness or anything else devastating. I lost my power on Friday night due to the storms and it did not return until about noon yesterday, but lo and behold, our DSL modem box thingy or whatever chooses not to work. So I have power...just no internet! So yeah, I've been going absolutely crazy!

I can check a few things in the blogging world while at work, but no email, which I am sure is piling up. And I have yet to upgrade my cell to have internet...so yeah, I've been going stir crazy without seeing you guys!

Going to go write up a few meme posts for the week and try to see all what I missed. I'll be skimming most of them and won't have much time to comment properly, but hoping to get the internet fixed sometime this week. Hopefully very soon, for my sanity's sake!
