Review--Darkness Unbound by Keri Arthur

Being half werewolf and half Aedh, Risa Jones can enter the twilight realms between life and death and see the reapers, supernatural beings that collect the souls of the dead. But she soon makes a terrifying discovery: Some sinister force is stealing souls, preventing the dead from ever knowing the afterlife.

Reapers escort souls--not snatch them--but Risa is still unnerved when a reaper shadows her in search of someone Risa has never met: her own father, an Aedh priest, who is rumored to be tampering with the gates of hell for a dark purpose. With the help of her "aunt"--half-werewolf, half-vampire Riley Jenson--and an Aedh named Lucian who may have lost his wings but none of his sex appeal, Risa must pursue whatever shadowy practitioner of blood magic is seizing souls, and somehow stop her father...before all hell breaks loose.

Keri Arthur's new series is off with a bang! Having enjoyed her series with Riley I was more than eager to read her Dark Angels series starting young Risa, only Risa is all grown up now! In Darkness Unbound, we get to see Risa in her everyday life before things get out of control.

It all starts when a sick little girl dies and her soul is missing, it's just gone. That's when higher powers get involved and how Azriel, a reaper, starts to follow her around in hopes to catch the bad guy. And he's uber hot!

Risa's other and more active love interest is Lucian, he was once an Aedh but is one no longer having his wings torn out. What everyone--the bad guys mostly--want is to know where Risa's father is, so they're coming after her, only Risa has never even met her father.

Riley and gang all make some appearances, more than I was expecting too! I thought a brief walk-on, but while their appearances were brief, there were a few of them!

Darkness Unbound was well paced with action, romance, and suspense! Fans of Keri's Riley books will know what to expect in the romance area and it does not disappoint! The ending comes to some shocking conclusions, but it isn't truly the end, since Risa still has a lot more to do before she can take a break!

I don't want to talk too much about the book because then as usual I may end up revealing spoilers, so I'll end my review here! Darkness Unbound is definitely a book you should check out if you've read Keri's Guardians series and if you haven't read that series--which you should--you won't be lost or confused. This is a NEW series for Keri with some familiar characters. So no worries there if you're new to Keri's world!

Overall rating 4.5/5 stars

  2. Wow! You posted your review quickly! Didn't you just finish reading this like... today? LOL Isn't Azriel a reaper though? You have me questioning myself; I'm going to have to go re-read my own review. Another amazing book by Keri Arthur and a great review on your part.
