From Rob Thomas, the creator of groundbreaking television series and movie Veronica Mars, comes the first book in a thrilling new mystery series.
Ten years after graduating from high school in Neptune, California, Veronica Mars is back in the land of sun, sand, crime, and corruption. She's traded in her law degree for her old private investigating license, struggling to keep Mars Investigations afloat on the scant cash earned by catching cheating spouses until she can score her first big case.
Now it's spring break, and college students descend on Neptune, transforming the beaches and boardwalks into a frenzied, week-long rave. When a girl disappears from a party, Veronica is called in to investigate. But this is not a simple missing person's case. The house the girl vanished from belongs to a man with serious criminal ties, and soon Veronica is plunged into a dangerous underworld of drugs and organized crime. And when a major break in the investigation has a shocking connection to Veronica's past, the case hits closer to home than she ever imagined.
The world of Veronica Mars has not ended! And it's truly a beautiful thing! I came wayyyy late into the game when it came to this show! And wow! It was awesome! What the freak was I doing back when it started?! Not I'm not 100% certain if Jennifer Graham and Rob Thomas collaborated on this together, or if it was more a she got his feedback when it came to getting the details of the show right and all that. Either way, this was truly a remarkable read and it's just like watching an episode of the show that shouldn't have ever ended!
The Thousand Dollar Tan Line picks up where the movie leaves off, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, you might want to wait to read this. Because there will be movie spoilers within it! As well as in this review too!
Veronica has made the decision to stay in Neptune, forgo working in a law firm and getting back into the family business. With her father still out of the office due to his accident, Veronica has taken over shop temporarily with Mac at her side! It was awesome seeing all the characters coming back in the book! Mac is the resident hacker of the business, though still working on a more official title for her job position, they are handed quite the money-making case. A teenage girl goes missing during Spring Break and it has all of Neptune in a roar.
As Veronica digs deeper into the disappearance she is led to find that a very dangerous cartel might be involved. And when a second girl goes missing, from the same house that had the party the first girl went missing from, Veronica looks further into that connection.
But there's quite a shocking surprise to come out of all of this mystery as well. One I wasn't expecting, nor Veronica for that matter. And it's pretty earth-shattering!
Again, I loved returning to Neptune this way! Veronica has all her friends back, and other people make appearances as well. Like Weevil! I never understood why we saw him wearing his leathers and riding with his old gang at the end of the movie, and the book doesn't really make that fact clear, but it is acknowledged. Perhaps that will be a mystery for another time!
Logan was around as well, but through spotty Skype chats. And even then, those chats were brief and often interrupted due to something or other. Let's also hope that these books speed up time so Logan can come back to Neptune!
The mystery was also very good! Like many of Veronica's cases, she gets herself very deep in the thick of things. She never seems to know how dangerous things can get! I really wasn't expecting the twist the mystery took as well! It was quite shocking, in a true Veronica Mars fashion of course!
There's not much more to say really about this read! It's the perfect addiction to all Veronica Mars fans, both old and new!
Overall Rating 5/5 stars
