How far would you go for happily ever after?
For as long as she can remember, Evangeline Fox has believed in true love and happy endings...until she learns that the love of her life will marry another.
Desperate to stop the wedding and to heal her wounded heart, Evangeline strikes a deal with the charismatic but wicked Prince of Hearts. In exchange for his help, he asks for three kisses, to be given at the time and place of his choosing.
But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that bargaining with an immortal is a dangerous game—and that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. He has plans for Evangeline, plans that will either end in the greatest happily ever after or the most exquisite tragedy….
Yes friends you read that right! I’ve re-read another book once again! I picked up Stephanie Garber’s Once Upon a Broken Heart in a re-read and it wasn’t long before I was falling under Garber’s spell once more! There is something to having a foggy memory because I was captivated and surprised once again with the magic of this story!
Evangeline
is a person who is pure good. She’s a strong heroine who believes in
true love, fantasy, magic, and happily-ever-afters. Even when she learns
her beloved, Luc, is marrying her stepsister, Marisol, Evangeline
believes there must be magic involved somehow. So she turns to the
Prince of Hearts for help. Bargaining with a Fate is never a good idea
and Evangeline soon learns this the hard way.
After
turning herself into stone to save everyone, Evangeline returns to her
world a few weeks later to find a lot has happened and no one came to
save her in turn. It was actually another Fate who had an alternative
cure. Evangeline is soon called upon by our favorite queen to attend an
ascension of Prince Apollo in the Magnificent North. Having a desire to
visit her mother’s homeland and take a break from her life in the south
she agrees, as long as she can bring her heartbroken stepsister with
her.
Honestly this
luncheon with Scarlett and Tella was one of my favorite parts! To have
these characters interact was just as nice the second time around! Lol. I
don’t want to make this a second review altogether so I’ll stop with my
recapping here.
I
honestly can’t decide if the Magnificent North is my favorite place in
this world or if it was the game of Caraval itself—which is its own
world despite moving about to other cities! There is definitely a sort
of lighter magic here though where Caraval left you unsure who to trust.
Though I can say Evangeline still has that problem here too!
Despite
Evangeline seeking romance, she doesn’t seem to be finding it. Her
first love left her for another, her love with Apollo doesn’t go well,
then there’s the strange connection she has with Jacks that just makes
things even more complicated. I’ll be curious as to what happens in the
sequel though because I know Garber will want to have a few more kisses
involved and I love her for that!
If
you’ve read any of Stephanie Garber’s books you know that they are all
magical! Each story sweeps you away into its own world where anything
goes. You could walk away with a full and happy heart or it may be
broken once more. You truly never know what you’ll get and that’s part
of the fun! I’m pretty much sold on Garber’s books for life now…I just
don’t think my wallet can handle it!
If you have yet to read any of Stephanie Garber’s books yet, you find yourself in a good spot here. While you don’t need to have read the Caraval
trilogy to enjoy this one, you can easily dive in and enjoy. Should you
want to know the true story Jacks holds back from Evangeline, you can
always pick the series up then too!
Overall Rating 5/5 stars—not that it could change really!
