Review--Foretold by Jana Oliver

In FORETOLD, the fourth Demon Trappers novel by Jana Oliver, Riley faces the final battle for humanity and Beck's heart—and Hell is the least of her problems

Now that Riley’s managed to (just barely) fend off Armageddon, everything’s changed. Well . . . most things. After their passionate kiss before the big battle in the cemetery, Beck is back to treating her like a little girl, as if nothing ever happened. While she’d love to just tell him off and move on, Riley vowed to take care of Beck the way he’s taken care of her since her father’s death—but she’s about to get a whole lot more than she bargained for. When she’s commissioned to go with Beck to his hometown and help him care for his dying mother, they stumble too close to a dark and murderous secret, one that Beck fears will drive Riley away from him forever. As chaos breaks loose, Riley may be Beck's only hope for redemption . . . and survival.

Meanwhile, up in Atlanta, it’s quickly becoming clear that Heaven may have won a battle, but the war is far from over. Riley and Beck face a stormy future, as Lucifer's ex-right-hand-man, Sartael, proves himself to be more resilient than anyone thought. He has Atlanta in his grip and is about to begin a brutal war with the prince of Hell. As the seconds tick down toward a final confrontation, it's up to Riley and the man she loves to finally defeat their old enemy, or lose everything they've fought for.

Foretold is the conclusion to Jana Oliver's Demon Trappers series and it was quite the read!! Last time around, Riley and the demon trappers and demon hunters prevented Armageddon and sent a Fallen, Sartael back to Hell where Lucifer is keeping him prisoner. Oril, free from his statue prison and owner of Riley's soul is cursed to do his bidding and kill the traitor demons who are not working for Lucifer anymore. Riley and Beck are having relationship woes before their relationship even has the chance to begin. Beck is back to keeping Riley at a distance and Riley is about fed up with Backwoods Boy's attitude!

The story takes off when Riley is "forced" to go with Beck to southern Georgia as he tends to his dying mother. Riley gets to meet the woman who basically neglected and abused (emotionally, and a little bit physically) her son. Riley is not impressed to say the least, but for some reason she makes an impression on the grouchy woman! But that's not the only trouble awaiting Beck in his hometown, his past is coming back to haunt him and an age old murder mystery is coming back to the present.

For the first half of the book we are in Beck's hometown and have the murder mystery going on. It was pretty exciting too, I didn't know what to expect, would it be something demon related or something more mundane? The who-done-it, came about halfway through and that put an end to that part of the story. It was nice having what I think of as "Beck" time. We got to see his hometown and learn more about his past. And there were a few almost tender moments between Riley and Beck. Their relationship now is kind of rocky. There are definitely a lot of feelings that these two need to work out!

The second half of the novel was equally exciting. We get to know more about Ori's plans. For he is planning something. He's taking Riley out every night to hunt demons and have her kill them. Training her for what's to come. And what's to come is another epic battle with Sartael! This one was definitely more shocking than last time and has earth shattering results!

I was very pleased with how this one ended! More pleased to see Riley and Beck get their game together and be together! Yes! After the halfway point about the romance between them begins to spark and kindle! And it was definitely romantic and sweet as the two try to find their way with one another, not sure how to proceed since they have had feelings for each other for so long!

The only thing that upset me about the ending was there were a few things left unsaid or unsettled. I don't want to get into them since it's kind of spoilery, they weren't big plot developments obviously, one was almost sort of big though, in my opinion at least. I guess only time will tell! Maybe another novella that will answer these two questions I had left brimming!

But overall this was a truly fabulous novel! Nonstop action I tell ya! Yes, ya! I am sad to see this series end--for I do believe that this was the last novel--yet I was quite happy with the way it went! A truly fabulous series that I highly recommend reading! Riley is witty and funny and what any reader would want in their YA heroine!

Overall rating 5/5 stars

  1. Yay, I’m so happy you liked this one too. FINALLY we get everything we have been waiting for since book one. I’m pretty sure this is the last book in the series. I loved the ending, maybe because I mostly cared about Beck and Riley and I am happy with their ending. I wouldn’t mind a Simon story. He is still so obviously messed up and I would like to see him get it together. Love the review!
