Review--Darkness Devours by Keri Arthur

New York Times bestselling author Keri Arthur has been hailed for her “smart, sexy” urban fantasy novels. Now, she continues her Dark Angels series set in the realm of danger and desire known as the Guardian World…

Half-werewolf, half-Aedh Risa Jones can enter the realm between life and death, and she can see the Reapers who collect the souls of the dead. Now, she is using her gifts—and the investigative know-how of a man who broke her heart—to find a cabal searching for the power to control time, reality, and fate. And this is besides her work for the Vampire Council, half of whom want her dead.

But for now the Council needs her alive. Someone is killing blood-whore addicted vampires, and Risa must find the guilty party. If she succeeds, she may finally convince the council to lift the execution order on her life. But before she succeeds, she must first survive…

I don't even remember when I last read the second Dark Angels novel, too long, that's for sure! Needless to say, my memory was pretty poor with what's gone down so far. But I was able to follow along easily enough, just one past event that is pretty key to some of the storyline here I couldn't remember. Not only that, but I wasn't sure if it actually happened in the past books or if it was one of those off scene events, thinking it might have been the latter.

Anyway, Keri Arthur's Darkness Devours was quite a read! Risa is back into the thick of things, still trying to find the remaining two keys that will basically unleash hell on earth and keep the souls from going to newborns. It basically will be a very bad, bad thing.

Risa has a lot on her plate. Besides trying to track down those keys she has to prove herself to Madeline Hunter from the Directorate is calling her in to work a case or else. the case involves the murder of some vampires, there seems to be some sort of pattern. Risa must solve the case within a short few days or else the council of vampires plans to execute her. Luckily she has Azriel at her side.

It was a bit of a challenge to get back into the swing of things, but I managed. Still enjoyed the book despite not remembering past events. There was a good deal of action and intrigue going on. Not quite mystery, although there was a little, but things were very suspenseful, because to add to all Risa's other troubles, she's being hunted by the Ania, a nasty little group of supernaturals to say the least.

Risa's love life continues to get complicated. Being half-were, she has some the werewolf sexual appetite, but doesn't go into heat or anything. The girl has stamina. So she continues to see Lucian, the Aedh, but things start to get dicey between them. Then there's the ever present tension between her and Azriel, where they both want each other, but hesitate to take that step. And then...yes there's more!...Risa had to contact her ex-boyfriend, Jak, the one who wrote the horrible article about her mother that was highly misconstrued. She needs his help and unfortunately is the best one to aid her.

I really enjoyed reading this one. The pacing was just right and there was a good deal of action. Sprinkle in some romance that is purely Keri and you have the makings of one kickass Urban Fantasy! Riley didn't make an appearance this time but Rhoan did! It's still fun to see past characters return, even briefly. The ending to this one was pretty intense, not pull-your-hair-out kind of cliffhanger but one of those, OMG-what's-going-to-happen-next kind. I'll have a brief interruptus with my next read then I plan on getting fully caught up with this series!

Keri Arthur is definitely a must-read for any and all Urban Fantasy readers! She was one of my first few authors that I started reading when I started reading adult books and I haven't lost her yet!

Overall Rating 4.5/5 stars
