ARC Review--Evernight by Kristen Callihan

Once the night comes . . .

Will Thorne is living a nightmare, his sanity slowly being drained away by a force he can't control. His talents have made him the perfect assassin for hire. But as he loses his grip on reality, there is no calming him—until he finds his next target: the mysterious Holly Evernight.

Love must cast aside the shadows . . .

Holly cannot fathom who would put a contract on her life, yet the moment she touches Will, the connection between them is elemental, undeniable—and she's the only one who can tame his bouts of madness. But other assassins are coming for Holly. Will must transform from killer to protector and find the man who wants Holly dead . . . or his only chance for redemption will be lost.

I received this ARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review, I was in no way compensated for this review.

Kristen Callihan's Evernight is a rival to Moonglow in being my favorite of the series to date! It was truly a remarkable and simply lovable read!

As with before, the story for this one is gets its foot in the door with the previous one, so in Shadowdance we saw Holly put a mechanical heart into Will, as she was forced to do and now Will is free and not too happy with her. He's a demon and now things are changing with him, his skin turns platinum and for whatever reason, being near Holly and her touch, chases the platinum away. It makes killing her a little bit harder to do.

Holly has been a recluse of sorts since gaining her freedom and having Will at her doorstep, wanting to kill her no less and then needing her help, doesn't make for happy times. But since she feels guilt for having played a part in his predicament, she wants to help him.

I loved the dynamics between these two. Let's face it, Will starts off as bit of an ass. He's presumptuous, smarmy, but yet also, fiercely protective of Holly. Someone is out to get her and he now makes it his job to keep her safe despite the animosity between them. But soon that animosity dulls and something else begins to "shimmer" between them. I always love how there's really no insta-love in Kristen's stories. Sure, you can tell when a romance is bound to happen between hero and heroine, but they have to work at it, just because one might be there, doesn't mean that the other is head over heels!

This one was extremely well-paced! Lots of good action coupled with some downtime moments and of course, those irresistible swoon-worthy moments! Gotta love those! The ending is one that nearly tore my heart apart as well, thinking that Kristen was going to go in a completely different direction for the first time ever...but I won't get further into that! Needless to say it was an ending that had my heart racing!

And naturally, we are given the hint--of course the next novel has been revealed already, so what hint is it really, but I digress!--of who our next leading couple will be in Soulbound, which releases this February! I will be counting down the days already because I am most eager to see Adam and Eliza's story after their interesting start!

Evernight was yet another remarkable read that takes steampunk and paranormal to a whole new level! It's not a series to be missed by fans of any of the genres!

  1. Wow, it sounds like you really loved this one! Unfortunately, I don't hand out a lot of five star reviews... I haven't read anything in this series, but it does sound good! I might give it a try.
